Functional Group Vietnam (FGV) was founded in 2017 by David Goddard, an Australian businessman who moved to Hanoi, Vietnam in 2011 and now resides in HCMC with his family.

 

Executive Leadership in Vietnam

 

David came to Vietnam from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to work in Vietnam International Bank (VIB), a local bank that CBA had acquired a strategic shareholding in. At VIB he had the dual responsibility as Head of Strategy & Business Development together with leading the Capability Transfer Program between CBA and VIB.

 

This program was a 5-year transformation program where CBA subject matter experts from Australia were deployed into VIB on a full-time basis to implement strategic initiates and improve the skills and capability of the bank. During the time David led this program, he had direct responsibility for managing over 60 CBA resources spread across various functions within VIB. Today, VIB is regarded as the benchmark amongst banks in Vietnam, consistently delivering best-in-class returns to shareholders.

 

Investor & Advisor in Vietnam

 

Upon completion of the 5-year program, David left banking to explore other business interests in Vietnam and Australia, including investing & advising to early-stage ventures in Vietnam and Australia. David has also successfully raised capital from international investors, identified fraudulent behaviour, and negotiated an exit in Vietnam for an international investor. David also continues to be the majority owner in a successful hospitality venture that has been operating in Vietnam for over 10 years.

 

Before Vietnam

Prior to relocating to Vietnam, David worked in the financial services industry in Sydney, Australia for organisations including Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Macquarie Bank across various functions including retail banking, funds management, strategy, finance, distribution, and client services. David has a Graduate Diploma in Economic (Social Sciences) from the University of Sydney and a Masters in Applied Finance & Investment from FINSIA.
